Offshore support vessels use a number of reference systems to maintain position, such as DGPS, radar, taut wire and laser technology, and some of the jack-up vessels have been utilising the Fanbeam laser radar during operations. As was highlighted at RMM's European Dynamic Positioning Conference in June 2013 in London, Seajacks has been using MDL's Fanbeam system during the installation of foundations and transition pieces.

MDL, part of Renishaw plc will be presenting its range of industry leading ruggedised laser measurement systems at the XV International Mine Surveying Congress in Auchen, Germany from 16th to 20th September 2013. Particular focus will be on MDL's latest cavity monitoring systems including the VS150 Mk3 rugged underground laser scanner and the unique borehole deployable mine scanner C-ALS® MK3.

In January 2014 Swathe Services will be working with Hydrocharting to run a multi-beam echosounder and MDL laser scanning training course with QINSy software. The 5 day course will be held in Southampton starting on Monday 27th January and finishing on Friday 31st January.
